Construction

I created the ‘Vanishing Birds’ installation to highlight the crisis in the UK bird population. The work consists of 624 hand shaped clay birds, 554 white birds and 70 red. The 70 red birds were coloured with a wash using red watercolour paint, once dry dappled marks were added with red acrylic paint.  Approximately 10 birds were threaded onto pieces of 1.2m white ribbon.  The 62 ribbon strands were then attached to a tree.

The work was created from clay to symbolise connection with the earth, the white ribbons that thread through the centre of each bird embody the infinite relationship that weaves through time and place connecting nature and humanity.  The installation is positioned and rooted in nature, white ribbon is looped round the branches of a cherry tree, a dwelling and food source for birds, its roots reaching deep within the earth and connecting to an unseen world.
